Ghanaian long jumper Robert Martey has said it is a dream come true to be selected to represent Africa at the upcoming IAAF Continental Cup after the just ended African Athletics Championships in Marrakech, Morocco.

Although Martey missed out on the chance to win a bronze medal by the narrowest of margins, (4 centimeters) after coming through with a leap of 7.80m in fourth place, he has been chosen to represent the continent.

The second edition of the IAAF Continental Cup which involves Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe will be held in Marrakech, Morocco in September.

Commenting on his qualification to represent the African continent at the World Cup, Robert Martey expressed his delight at the news.

“It’s a dream come true to qualify for the IAAF World Cup,” he said.

“I once watched Aziz Zakari represent Africa at the World Cup and afterwards set out to achieve that aim in my career.

Martey, who qualified for the African Athletics Championship on the back of an impressive season that had seen him jump 7.92m, was gutted not to have won a medal in Morocco.

“I was disappointed not to have won a medal in the long jump event because I felt I was on form going into the competition. But I got injured during the competition and that affected my progress at the competition.

“All the same, I will go back home and work harder before returning to Morocco for the World Cup.”

The competition, which sees athletes represent continents not nations, takes place on the 13th and 14th of September,2014 in Marrakech  and will comprise 20 track and field events for male and female athletes from Africa, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas.
