The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Top Four begins this weekend in Accra and Kumasi and even though it is essentially a pre-season tournament, Hearts of Oak want to win it to give them a boost ahead of the new Ghanaian football season.
The team made the competition after finishing third in last season’s league season and in an interview with Citi Sports on Friday, the club’s spokesperson, Muheeb Saeed said the focus on preparing for the season will not be lost on the team but they will still aim at winning. They play against Heart of Lions on Saturday in Accra in their home encounter.
“The Top 4 is basically to fine-tune the team ahead of the main season. It offers the technical team the opportunity to see the team in competitive matches and it will help them take care of the glitches in the team.
However, it will be very important for us to win the tournament. That will bring a good effect on the morale of the team and the supporters as well.”
The competition will take a different format this year as there are no round robin matches.
Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions will face off in Accra on 30th August and in a return leg on the 2nd of September while Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold will play each other in Kumasi and Obuasi on the 31st of August and 3rd of September respectively.
The four clubs have been GHC 15,000 each in appearance fees while the gate proceeds will be shared among the home and away teams and the Ghana League Clubs Association.
