Sevilla missed the opportunity to go top of La Liga as they were beaten by Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.
The visitors had won seven of their last eight league matches, but went behind when Aritz Aduriz finished powerfully from Markel Susaeta’s cross.
Bilbao continued to create the best chances, but Aymeric Laporte hit a free-kick wide and Susaeta’s angled drive was saved by goalkeeper Beto.
The defeat leaves Sevilla fourth, two points behind leaders Real Madrid.
Sevilla have only won La Liga once – in 1945-46 – but their bright start to the season had raised supporters’ hopes that they could be in title contention.
However, Unai Emery’s side disappointed against Bilbao, recording only one shot on target.
This result, and Valencia’s 3-1 win at Villarreal, means the top five teams in La Liga are separated by two points.
