Just like 2013, Ghana could be using Abu Dhabi as its camping base for the 2015 Afcon.
First-hand information available to supersport.com indicates that the Ghana FA officially mentioned their intention to use the Zayed Sports City in UAE as camping base when they met to discuss the Black Stars’ budget for the 2015 Afcon with the sports ministry last Tuesday.
The ultra-modern facility was used by the Black Stars for their preparations towards the South Africa cup of nations in January 2013.[contextly_sidebar id=”DaZUmRzc8dwvjSOBoFNkiS8QHuDgzfC1″] The Ghana FA and the Black Stars technical team are yet to firm up details for the pre-2015 Afcon preparations and same applies to the choice of a camping base, says George Afriyie, when supersport.com contacted the football association.
“We have not confirmed anything as such [Abu Dhabi camp]; we are still in the discussions,” the Black Stars’ management committee chairman told supersport.com
New coach Avram Grant is away on a two-week familiarization tour abroad, meeting and scouting his Black Stars players.
“Currently, the coach is out of town and needs to return with his programme. So as soon as he returns, we will roll out the programme,” Afriyie added.
Further checks by supersport.com reveal that Ghana has indeed had correspondence with managers of the Abu Dhabi facility likewise west African neighbours Ivory Coast and Mali.
These three countries could play warm-up friendlies against each other should they end up using the facility concurrently. Each country will thus have played at least two friendlies before flying to Equatorial Guinea for the Afcon which kicks off on 17 January, 2015.
Ghana alongside Senegal, Algeria and South Africa are in Group C of the African flagship championship.
