Afcon-bound stars warm up with goals in Europe

A number of Afcon-bound stars were on target for their clubs in Europe over the weekend and here we bring you those in the top leagues.


Wilfried Bony scored his eighth goal of the campaign for Welsh side Swansea City, but it was not enough to stop them losing 1:2 to Tottenham in the English Premier League.


Ghana striker Jordan Ayew continued his fine scoring form to help his club Lorient to a 3:1 spanking of visitors Metz in Ligue 1 on Saturday. The 23-year-old struck the opening goal in the 13th minute – his third strike in his last four games.

Algerian playmaker Ryad Boudebouz netted his second goal of the season to inspire Bastia to a 2:0 win over Bastia. Compatriot Aissa Mandi was also on target with his third goal of the season to help Reims to a 3:2 victory over visitors Evian TG.

Cape Verde forward Ryan Mendes scored the second goal for Lille as they crushed visitorsToulouse 3:0 on Sunday. Lille’s first two goals were assisted by Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye.


Algeria forward Sofiane Feghouli struck twice for his club Valencia on Saturday as they spanked visitors Rayo Vallecano 3:0 in the Spanish La Liga. The 24-year-old scored the opening goal in the 13th minute and doubled the advantage in the 34th minute, before Spanish teammate Pablo Piatti capped the win two minutes later.


South Africa playmaker Thulani Serero scored his first goal of the season to inspire his club Ajax Amsterdam to a 3:1 win over Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday.

Burkina Faso teen sensation Bertrand Traore scored for Vitesse Arnhem as they drew 1:1 atGroningen. It was the 19-year-old playmaker’s second goal of the season.


Senegal striker Moussa Sow scored twice for Fenerbahce as the spanked visiting Sivasspor 4:1 in the Turkish Superlig on Friday. They were his sixth and seventh goals of the season.


Congo DR forward Junior Kabananga scored his seventh goal of the season to open a 2:1 win for his club Cercle Brugge over visitors Mouscron Peruwelz. France-born Mali striker Abdoulay Diaby scored Mouscron’s goal. It was the 23-year-old’s 12th goal of the campaign.


Away from Europe, Ghana striker and skipper Asamoah Gyan struck twice for his club Al Ain as they hammered hosts Bani Yas 0:3 in the Arabian Gulf League on Sunday. The 29-year-old scored in the 38th and 55th minutes either side of a goal from Slovakian teammate Miroslav Stoch in the 41st minute. It was Gyan’s six and seventh goals of the season.
