Mali skipper Seydou Keita has become the joint holder of his country’s all time appearance record.
The legend now has 99 caps for the Eagles after featuring in the 0-3 defeat to South Africa on Wednesday.
Former goalkeeper Mahamadou Sidibé is the other record holder of international appearances for Mali. The former Barcelona midfielder, in typically modest fashion, downplayed the feat of equaling Maha’s feat.
“I’ve had 99 caps but we still lost. That should be the story – that we lost and are looking forward to doing better in the tournament. But of course I am thankful to everyone who has helped me come this far in serving my nation.”
The Eagles kicked-off their preparation for the continental showpiece with a 2-1 victory over Gabon’s Ligue 1 outfit FC Akanda on Sunday, with Keita scoring the opener for Mali.
Mali are in Group D alongside Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea.
