An own goal from Maphosa Modibo and Benjamin Tetteh gave the Black Satellites a 2-0 win over South Africa in the opening Group B match of the 2015 African Youth Championships in Senegal.
The Satellites started the match on a positive note and got the breakthrough after 2 minutes when Prosper Kassim of Inter Allies run down the left channel and sent in a cross that forced Modibo to send it into his own net as Yaw Yeboah closed in to score.
Ghana continued to control the match and they scored a second goal when Benjamin Tetteh lobbed the South Africa goalkeeper after being through on goal.
The second half saw South Africa coming into the match but their attacks ended in front of the Satellites penalty area while Ghana’s forward play ended with no end product because of either poor finishing or over-elaborate passing.
South Africa’s Maphosa Modibo was sent off in the second half for two yellow card offences.
The victory is the first win for Sellas Tetteh in an opening match of the 3 African Youth Championships he has contested.
Ghana’s next group match is against Zambia on Thursday and another win for the Black Satellites will give the team passage to the semi-finals and ticket to the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand later this year.
