Chairman of the Local Black Stars Management Committee, Fred Pappoe is confident in the abilities of some of the players and is certain a fair few can actually play for the main Black Stars.
The CHAN team is currently in Obuasi preparing for the COSAFA Cup in South Africa which starts on the 17th of May and the likes of Medeama forward Nathaniel Asamoah and main Black Stars goalie Fatau Dauda are with the group.
Pappoe, who has been observing the unit, is tipping some of the players to get call-ups to the main Black Stars team for future matches.
“I believe that there are few players in the CHAN team who command places in any 21-man or 23-man team named for the main Black Stars team but of course, that is left to the discretion of the man Black Stars coach and to an extent, the coach of the CHAN (since he assists the Black Stars coach),” Pappoe said in an interview with Citi Sports on Monday.
In recent weeks, calls have been made from several quarters for the inclusion of locally-based players into the main Black Stars team and some have even suggested a quota for these players who play in Ghana.
However, Pappoe said places in the Black Stars should be worked out based on merit and hard work. He stated that locally-based players will get their due recognition when stakeholders look more at the First Capital Plus Premier League.
” Even though I believe some of the players are good for the main team, I do not also believe in the quota system. There are players who can break into the main Stars team and they have shown enough to play.
I think that the coaches should pay more attention to the local league and the activities of the CHAN team. When that is done, they will be convinced of the talents around.”
The team is using the COSAFA Cup to prepare for the CHAN 2016 qualifiers which begins later this year with a two-legged tie against Cote d’Ivoire.
