Panathinaikos midfielder Michael Essien has arrived in Munich, Germany where he will undergo a groin surgery after suffering a sprain during training last week.

The former Chelsea and Milan player, who joined the Greek Super League side as a free agent this month, is expected to meet top-notch German surgeon Ulrike Mousavek on Wednesday and return to Greece on Thursday if the operation ends successfully, according to his club.

Essien, who is expected to be a key player in manager Yannis Anastasiou’s squad following his rich experience from the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, has been however left out of the squad to face Club Brugge in the third round of the Uefa Champions League.

Essien won the competition with Chelsea in 2012 before joining Milan last season during which he was restricted to 22 appearances in all competitions due to injuries.

He has been capped 58 times on international level for Ghana, scoring nine goals in the process after making his debut in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations against Morocco.

He was part of the Ghana squad that played in the Fifa World Cup for the first time in 2006 in Germany and also at the Brazil 2014.
