Egypt has announced its withdrawal from the upcoming All Africa Games in Congo. The North Africans will not thus take part in both the men’s and women’s events at the competition.
The announcement was made by the Confederation of African Football and it was made to to inform Egypt’s opponents in the men’s and women’s football events.
Ghana were due to face Egypt in Group B of the women’s football tournament but they will now face only Cameroon and South Africa while the Black Meteors also had to face Egypt in Group B originally. Now, Ghana will play against Senegal and Nigeria.
The organisers are mandated by the competition’s rules to bring in a replacement team i.e. the last team to be eliminated in the qualifiers according to Article 19 (B) of the competition
The rules state: “If a team withdraws after having qualified for the Final Tournament, but before the actual start of the Final Tournament, the Organizing Committee may replace it by the last team it has eliminated, if the circumstances are favourable…”
Senegal (who got eliminated in the women’s tournament) and Burundi (who got eliminated in the men’s tournament) are to replace Egypt according to the rules but they decided against taking part.
The tournament will be held from 6 – 18 September 2015 in Brazzaville, Congo.
