West Ham 2-0 Newcastle: Payet at the double for Hammers

Dimitri Payet continued his brilliant start to Premier League life with a match-winning double as West Ham easily saw off Newcastle at Upton Park.

The £12m signing from Marseille scored in either half, the first an emphatic strike inside the opening ten minutes, to inspire the Hammers to their first home win of the season.

The French midfielder doubled his personal tally and his side’s lead just after half time, volleying home the rebound after Victor Moses had rattled the underside of the crossbar.

Newcastle right-back Daryl Janmaat had the visitors’ best moments but Slaven Bilic’s side comfortably cruised to victory as they managed to transfer their impressive away form to the Boleyn Ground.

But the problems are mounting for Steve McClaren who, eight years after the infamous last meeting between the two managers which cost him his job as England manager, finds his side bottom of the Premier League after five games.

It took just nine minutes for the Hammers to find a breakthrough, Payet taking Mark Noble’s pass into his stride before caressing a fine finish past the despairing Tim Krul.

Despite the hosts’ dominance, Janmaat nearly levelled proceedings but for Darren Randolph’s quick reactions to smother his low effort.

Aside from that scare, West Ham were rarely threatened and nearly doubled their lead when Moses ran onto Payet’s through ball, but could only fire wide of the near post.

The Hammers extended their advantage almost immediately after the break, Payet pouncing after Moses had raced past the brittle Newcastle backline before striking the bar.

Janmaat again looked the most likely to gain a foothold for the Magpies, but Randolph was again equal to his low drive.

Randolph then made a smart save to deny Siem de Jong’s deflected effort, before the Irons faithful got a first sight of Andy Carroll in nearly six months with a late cameo appearance as Bilic’s side ran the game down.
