Spokesperson of Accra Hearts of Oak, Kwame Opare Addo, was involved in a heated exchange of words that almost turned physical with Takoradi-based sports journalist Israel Fordah on Wednesday in Takoradi at a press soiree.
The event was put together by GHALCA to meet the press and interact with them ahead of the tournament which would start today.
However, proceedings took a sour turn when a question from a journalist for Hearts coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi seemed to rub the team’s officials wrongly.
The reporter asked Yatsuhashi if he could say which position would constitute a failure for Hearts at the end of the tournament.
Hearts team manager Sabahn Quaye and spokesperson Opare Addo asked the coach to decline answering the question since they thought it was unfair to the coach.
But they soon became enraged when another journalist, Israel Fordah of Radio 360, asked Quaye to keep his cool and allow the question to be answered.
Citi Sports sources at the event say the two men were very hostile to Fordah and this was revealed by audio recordings of the episode that had Quaye yelling at Fordah:
“It is not a good question. Why are you talking about failure when the tournament has not started? You should know how to talk to me.”
Opare Addo could also be heard yelling: “Do you think you are the only one who is a journalist? Do you know how many years I have been practising? My friend, I will respond to you. I will respond to you.”
After this, Opare Addo left his seat and confronted the reporter and almost poked the reporter in the eye while Yatsuhashi sat down quietly and watched on.
Addo and Quaye were taken out of the room in a bid to resolve the matter by top GHALCA officials and other people present.
The soiree was eventually continued after apologies were rendered.
Citi Sports sources present at the soiree say observers expressed disappointment at the turn of events and their opinions mainly focused on the conduct of Opare Addo.
Hearts will face Aduana on Thursday at 6:30pm in the second match of the day after AshGold vs Berekum Chelsea encounter.
