Slutski offers to step down after Russia’s elimination

Leonid Slutski has offered his resignation as Russia coach following the team’s UEFA EURO 2016 exit.

Russia were beaten 3-0 by Wales in Stadium de Toulouse on Monday, a result which condemned them to bottom spot in Group B. They leave the tournament having picked up just one point – thanks to a 1-1 draw with England in their opening fixture – from their three games in France.

“I would like to apologise to the Russian supporters for our performances, and to the fans in the stadium and watching at home on TV; they did not deserve this,” said Slutski, who has been combining his international role with that of CSKA Moskva coach.

“I take responsibility. I had enough time to find players. If we did not succeed it is truly my mistake. Someone else should take over with a big championship to come [the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia].”

Slutski succeeded Fabio Capello in August last year, initially signing a deal to the end of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying.
