The 2nd edition of the Millenium Marathon will be happening in Accra on the 3rd of September and it will cover a distance of 21 kilometres.
The race will start and finish at the Independence Square and over 40,000 athletes from in and outside Ghana are expected to be part of the event.
Speaking at the media launch, the Chief Director of the Sports Ministry, Victor Senaya, said that the marathon would help to raise the profile of the city of Accra among other things.
“We are counting on the media to publicise the marathon. It has the potential to boost the brand of the city of Accra especially as we will be expecting visitors. That raises the question of tourism. I am pleased that the people of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly are with us and they raised the issue of sanitation.
We cannot talk about sports and not talk about the youth. It improves health and it is preventive medicine. It also helps to re channel the energies of young people especially as we head towards the elections.”
The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly has offered to give the organisers some help to sweep and paint the city before the marathon. It has also stated that it would give some trucks to help with transporting items in relation to the marathon.
Mayor of Accra, Dr. Oko Vanderpuye called for business entities to come and support the organizers of the Millenium Marathon. He said that the event offered them the chance to sell their wares and make their products visible to the many eyes who would witness the marathon.
