The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has released a statement to express its gratitude to the various entities that provided support to it ahead of the 2016 Rio Games.
The Ghana Olympic Committee faced a challenge of funding before the start of the Games and in an interview with Citi Sports before the Games, Chef de Mission of Ghana’s team to Rio, Chris Essilfie, stated that the GOC had spoken to the Sports Minister who gave some input in terms of preparing a budget and getting a sponsor.
Entities like Sunais and Group Ndoum supported Team Ghana in the area of kits and hotel accommodation while the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and Nyaho Medical Centre gave support in terms of flight tickets and medical screening.
The team’s headline sponsor, African Tiger, with the brand name “Cocoa from Ghana”, supported the GOC with funding for its activities.
Ghana sent a total of 16 athletes to the Rio Games.
Below is a copy of the statement:
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) expresses its heartfelt appreciation to all sponsors and supporters who responded to the call to support Team Ghana in its recent campaign to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
Your invaluable sponsorships and contributions played a huge role in ensuring that our young sportsmen and sportswomen were able to live out their dreams in Rio.
We want to publicly acknowledge the contributions you made in order for Ghanaians to also have the opportunity to appreciate the support you gave our Olympic team.
Below is the list of corporate sponsorships the GOC received leading up to the Rio 2016 Games:

We extend a special “Thank you” to Honorable Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the Minister of Youth and Sports and his team at the Ministry.
It was his commitment to ensuring that the contingent got the support it needed that led him to initiate and sustain the conversations with GNPC, which ultimately led to the funding they extended.
Similarly, he successfully arranged for his team to directly pay per the bulk of the per diems in Rio, for the 32-member contingent.
Without the support of the sponsors and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Team Ghana’s participation at the Rio 2016 Olympics would not have been possible. For that, the GOC thanks you all again! You helped make Ghana proud.
