Diego Costa suffers thigh injury, misses matches vs England, Macedonia

Chelsea have been dealt an injury scare with news Diego Costa will miss Spain’s upcoming matches against Macedonia and England due to a thigh injury.

The 28-year-old was unable to take a full part in Spain training earlier this week and, after losing his battle for fitness, the Spanish Football Federation announced on Thursday that he had been replaced in the squad.

Former Liverpool man Iago Aspas has received a surprise call-up to take Costa’s place in Julen Lopetegui’s 25-man group.

The 29-year-old striker has scored seven goals this season in all competitions for Celta Vigo, who he rejoined for £3.5m last summer.

An RFEF statement read: “Diego Costa is definitely out of the national team for the matches against Macedonia and England.

“The Spanish-Brazilian, who had been training away from the squad, leaves the camp. In his place comes Iago Aspas, who could make his Spain debut.”

The statement added that Costa had linked up with his Spain team-mates on Tuesday with a thigh problem, which was detected during tests taken on Monday.

Costa rejoined the squad for training on Thursday but, following discussions between the player, Lopetegui and the Spain medical team to see if Costa was still feeling any discomfort, he was ruled out of both internationals.

Spain take on Macedonia in a World Cup qualifier in Granada on Saturday before facing England in a friendly next Tuesday at Wembley.

Chelsea will be hoping the injury to Costa – the Blues’ top scorer with nine goals – is nothing serious.

Antonio Conte’s side are back in action with a trip to Middlesbrough following the international break, before then taking on potential title rivals Tottenham and Manchester City.
