Veteran Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien is closing in on a deal with Croatian premier league side HNK Rijeka, Citi Sports can confirm.
The former Chelsea player who is currently a free agent has had the past couple of seasons ravaged by injury and was limited to just 17 appearances during his stay with his last club Panathanaikos.
Aside his injury woes Essien has also been involved with some legal issues connected
with his contract.
According to him, he was released by the club without his consent when he still had one year left on his deal.
He has now filed a case at the Finance Dispute Resolution chamber of the Greek Football Federation and is reportedly seeking £550,000 in compensation.
He was the club’s highest paid player during his time with Panathanaikos.
According to Citi Sports sources HNK Rijeka have been in touch with the camp of Essien since the start of the winter transfer window but failed to make a move due to some challenges.
