The Arsenal forward’s 37th strike in 108 games saw him join Marcelo Salas at the top of the list of Chile‘s all-time top scorers but he fluffed a chance to break the record when he missed from the penalty spot.
His ratio isn’t quite on the level of Salas, however, with the legendary striker having managed the total in just 70 games.
Fortunately for the home side, the spot-kick failure was ultimately meaningless as Esteban Paredes fired a quick brace before half-time to secure the three points.
The first of the double saw Sanchez go on a brilliant run, beating five Venezuela defenders before passing to Charles Aranguiz who crossed for the midfielder to tap home.
Sanchez wasn’t done there as he nodded across goal for Paredes to apply the most simple of finishes.
West Brom striker Solomon Rondon pulled one back for the visitors in the second half but a comeback wasn’t to materialize.
The result sees La Roja climb above Argentina on goal difference to go fourth in the table.
