The Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, has tasked the Ghana Olympic Committee to get the nation to win medals in next year’s Commonwealth Ghana in Australia and boost the nation’s performances in the competition.
The competition will run from April 4 to 15, 2018 on Australia’s Gold Coast in Queensland.
Apart from the 1966 Games in Kingston, Jamaica and 1974 Games in Christchurch in New Zealand, Ghana has not won more than 4 medals in the Commonwealth Games and a more disturbing fact is that there has not been a Ghanaian gold medallist in the Games since 2006 when the event was held in Melbourne.
Asiamah was speaking at the media launch of the Games and he said the GOC had to ensure more medals especially as it would be getting support from the Ministry.
He also said that Ghana had go to such events to win and not just to participate.
“At this stage of our history, we need to compete in these competitions and not participate. It is our desire to market Ghana in the international arena through superior sporting performances.
The Ministry will support the thorough preparation of the team for the Games but the GOC will have to assure us of more medals. Ghanaians deserve value for money.”
Ghana is expected to send a contingent of about 50 athletes to take part in about 12 disciplines.
