UFC president Dana White has confirmed that a fight between MMA fighter Conor McGregor and undisputed boxing legend Floyd Mayweather is almost a done deal.
It has been a fight that started off as a humourous ‘what if’ scenario, but now it appears the most unlikely of boxing matches is actually going to happen.
In an interview on the Chris Mannix show, White was asked if he was actively negotiating the terms with McGregor, in which the UFC Boss gave a definitive yes.
“I am – Conor has been a guy who has stepped up in times of need here, so I want to do this for Conor. I want him to be able to make this kind of money…I think we’re actually there, I just need to get together with him and finalise some stuff and then it’s onto Mayweather.”
However that ‘stuff’ may need to wait a month or two as White said he is not going to speak to McGregor until after his baby is born.
He said: “Conor McGregor is having a baby right now. After his girlfriend delivers her baby, we’ll start working on this deal.”
White also spoke about how this fight might not be as one-sided as many people predict, with the majority of fight fans predicting a quick win for Mayweather.
“The thing that makes this fight very intriguing for me is that Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old,” he continued.
“Yes he’s one of the best of all time, but he’s 40, Conor’s 27. Conor’s a much bigger guy than Floyd Mayweather. Conor McGregor is a southpaw, Floyd has trouble with southpaws. Conor McGregor has knockout power in both hands, Floyd Mayweather does not.
“If you sit down with Conor McGregor he’ll make you believe that he’s going to win the fight, so I’m fascinated to see how this thing plays out.”
Finally the UFC President was asked if we’ll see this mega-fight happen this year, his response?
“In 2017, I think you will.”
