Ghana’s Christian Atsu was in party mood as Newcastle won the English Championship title on Sunday after beating Barnsley 3-0 at St. James’ Park.
The Magpies had already secured promotion but they were bent on winning the title for pride’s sake.
However, they needed Brighton and Hove Albion to slip at Aston Villa for that to happen.
They got the needed result as Brighton drew 1-1 with Villa and that made Newcastle United champions of the English second-tier after winning it back in 2010 on their way back to the Premier League following relegation in the 2008/2009 season.
In the game at St. James’ Park, Atsu played a part in their first goal which was scored by Ayoze Perez. Hassadio Maidara and Bright Gayle scored the other goals which confirmed them as champions.
After the match, Atsu posted a picture of his wife and child with the Championship trophy with the caption:
“Yes we are champions #GodIsTheReason

The match was Atsu’s 32nd of the season and he scored 5 for Newcastle. It in unclear if Newcastle will talk to Chelsea about the possibility of signing Atsu on a permanent deal or the player will head back to Chelsea, his parent club.
