Minister of Sports Isaac Asiamah has revealed government’s plans of instituting a sports fund which will be geared towards addressing the needs of sports persons in the country.
The seeming neglect of the country’s heroes especially came to light after the demise of some big name coaches in the last few months.
Veteran coach J.E Sarpong also recently bemoaned the disregard for ageing former sportsmen and women in the country.
According to the minister, the idea behind the initiative is to provide a backup plan for the country’s sportsmen during and after their careers to ensure their well being after retirement.
“Retirement in football terrifies sports stars. Indeed most footballers thrive on fame and fortune, so the longer the career the more frightening the end looks.”
“We on our part as government are in the process of setting up a national sports fund that will comprehensively address the challenges of sportsmen and women including our retired footballers,” he said.
