Salomon Kalou scored one penalty and missed another as Hertha Berlin claimed a 1-1 draw at Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
The former Chelsea forward calmly converted from the spot 10 minutes from time after Hertha forward Davie Selke was upended in the area by Nicolas Hofler.
Kalou’s successful kick came three minutes after he blazed a penalty over the crossbar following a foul by Freiburg captain Julian Schuster on substitute Arne Maier.
The struggling hosts, searching for just a second win of the season, had led from the 52nd minute with a penalty of their own.
Janik Haberer dispatched the kick into the bottom left corner following Niklas Stark’s barge on Christian Gunter.
Felix Uduokhai scored a last-gasp equaliser as Wolfsburg snatched a 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim.
The 20-year-old defender nodded in his first goal for the club from Daniel Didavi’s corner in the first minute of stoppage time to cancel out Kerem Demirbay’s penalty.
Despite the late leveller, the 14th-placed Wolves have now drawn all five matches since Martin Schmidt replaced Andries Jonker as manager last month and last tasted victory on August 26.
They should have been ahead in the 11th minute at the Volkswagen Arena, but midfielder Maximilian Arnold saw his penalty saved by the legs of Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Liverpool loanee Divock Origi also came close to putting the home side ahead when he rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box, while Yunus Malli was denied by another fine save from Baumann.
Schmidt’s men were made to pay for their profligacy in the 76th minute when Germany midfielder Demirbay coolly scored his first goal of the campaign into the top right corner from the spot following Marcel Tisserand’s foul on Benjamin Hubner.
However, the visitors were denied a first league win in three as Uduokhai climbed highest at the far post to divert Didavi’s right-wing cross into the bottom left corner.
Elsewhere, Cologne and Werder Bremen both remain without a win this season after they shared a goalless draw.
Bottom club Cologne had the better of the opportunities at RheinEnergieStadion, but they were unable to make the breakthrough and have now registered just two points from their opening nine league fixtures.
Fellow strugglers Bremen, who failed to score for the fourth successive match, are one place higher on five points.
