MLS Playoffs: Success for Mensah, Afful while Blessing, Accam suffer defeats

It was a mixed bag of emotions for high-profile Ghanaian players in the first round of Major Soccer League playoffs in the United States.

Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful, Mohammed Abu and Lalas Abubakar enjoyed success Columbus Crew beat Atlanta United 3-1 on penalties in the knockout round.

While Mensah lasted the entire match, Afful was substituted on the 120th minute mark for Adam Jahn who scored the third and winning penalty for Columbus Crew.

Afful had a good chance cleared off the line in the 118th minute.

Columbus Crew will face New York City FC in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

However, there will be no progression for David Accam and Latif Blessing as their teams, Chicago Fire and Sporting Kansas City suffered losses.

Fire, with Accam playing for 90 minutes, lost 4-0 at home to New York Red Bulls to end their playoff journey four years after their last participation.

Latif Blessing played 100 minutes for Sporting Kansas City but could not find the net on his playoff debut as a goal from Houston Dynamo’s Alberth Elis four minutes into extra time settled matters.
