Citi Sports can confirm that the Golden Rackets will head into the Davis Cup qualifiers with the full compliment of its team after the national team coach Henry Acquah was provided with funding to travel and meet the team in Morocco.
The team, made up of George Darko, Wisdom Na-Adjrago, Pascal Ziyab and Jeff Bagerbaseh, has been in the ITF High Performance Centre in Morocco in the past week preparing for the Davis Cup qualifiers in Egypt.
However, the Ghana Tennis Federation was not supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports due to a lack of finances and that left coach Acquah in Ghana.
But one of the main benefactors of the sport in Ghana, McDan Shipping, intervened to pay for the coach’s flight to Morocco to meet up with the team.
The gesture follows McDan’s earlier deed of sponsoring the team to Morroco and catering for their upkeep in terms of per diems, feeding, accomodation and training costs.
The sponsorship package was to honour the company’s promise of sending the highest-placing players in the McDan Open.
With the coach set to join the team, preparations for the David Cup Africa Zone 3 qualifiers will continue ahead of the tournament which will be played in Cairo from October 26 to 30.
Ghana will hope to be one of the two qualifiers that will emerge from the tournament.
Nine nations will compete in the event and they will be split into two groups or pools.
The teams will play against each other in each pool and the winners and runners-up will fight for the two slots in the Euro/Africa Zone II in 2016.
Ghana will be at the tournament with Algeria, Egypt, Benin, Mozambique, Nigeria, Namibia, Tunisia, and Libya.
